Figure Skating Sit Spin Variations: Edge Change (Bobbe Shire)

Bobbe Shire discusses change of edge sit spins.  (This is a continuation of Bobbe’s discussion of change edge upright spins and change edge camel spins.)  As Bobbe notes, the edge change on the back sit is easier (and hence the recent rule changes…after this video was recorded) than the forward sit.  Bobbe recommends using the cannonball position to make sure the spin gets credit and as a way to keep proper tension.

Bobbe offers another tip.  She suggests starting in a back sit and dropping the hips (“dropping the rear end into a shoot-the-duck”) to help transfer the weight and switch the edge.  Sometimes the skater can pick up speed and by dropping the hips the skater will get the feature by maintaining the sit position (no intermediate positions). Again, Bobbe’s demonstrators are excellent and make these spins look easier than they are.  The final demonstration is switching from a forward sit spin to the forward outside edge.
