Sit Spin Figure Skating Variations: Pancake (Bobbe Shire)

Bobbe Shire discusses the details of a pancake sit spin feature.  As Bobbe explains, this feature is not overly difficult to get as most reasonably flexible skaters can eventually get into the position.

Bobbe offers three specific tips to make the pancake spin fast.  The free foot (from toe to heel) should be parallel to the ice.  The lower leg of the free side should also be parallel to the ice.  And finally, the skater should close the torso down, chest on top of legs.

In a pancake, the skater has their hands to help them position and move their foot and leg.  To fix the problem of the free foot pointed downward, Bobbe has her skaters grab the free foot near the toe with their opposite hand.  To create more leverage and to reduce the chances of getting cut on the skate blade, Bobbe suggests having the skater grab the skate with an overhand grip covering the laces.  She then has the skater use the other hand to push down on the free knee to get the lower leg parallel to the ice.

Bobbe also describes alternative hand and arm positions such as one where the skater grabs the free foot with both hands and uses the elbow to push the knee down.

Nice demonstrations as always from Bobbe’s skaters.

Greats tips. Nice to see some specific criteria to assist these features. I learned them with a guess and check method until they worked well. This will be much improved
