Page Lipe discusses jump take-off direction. Like most top coaches, Page teaches her skaters to take off facing forward on all back entrance jumps. She shows some walk-throughs and drills to understand the concept and develop the proper feeling, and explains it in detail with respect to single, double and triple loop.
This is a short but incredibly important video. Some of my survey results show that only about half of coaches believe a loop jump takes off forward. Slow motion video proves that it does. Page, like most top coaches, uses technique that helps her skaters pivot forward before leaving the ice. Naturally, this information has been somewhat controversial because such a high percentage of coaches still believe in backward or sideways take-offs.
Notice in this video when Page tells the demonstrator to stay down in her knee longer. This is one of the most common errors that skaters make in all jumps – coming out of their knees too soon and leaving the ice before they get to forward.
Also notice in the drill at the barrier how Page insists the skater press up through the toe. This is important because just over 1/4 of surveyed coaches still believe that a loop jump lifts off a clean edge.
So, this video has some incredibly important information. I hope these concepts help you in your coaching. If this is new information for you, you’re not alone. Please leave a comment for discussion.

I will definitely keep this exercise in mind for when I start teaching triples – thank you
this is what I teach and it is fabulous if you ever want kids to do triples.
