Ice Skating Turns Advanced: Backward Outside Brackets (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma teaches backward outside brackets.  This is a continuation of Amy’s discussion of forward brackets (forward outside brackets and forward inside brackets).

As is so common with top coaches, notice that Amy starts with the fundamentals of alignment and position on a secure edge.  Amy wants the skaters leaning into the circle, and leaning over the turn.  The skaters should enter with the feet in a toe-to-heel position.  Amy discusses where the weight is on the blade and she talks about edge pressure.

Amy also draws some helpful pictures on the ice and offers a practical suggestion.  It’s very common for skaters to come off the circle when doing the turn.  By making the turn exit sooner (on the turn axis) or making the turn be “smaller,” skaters can fix this error.  Amy says, “Make the turn like a hiccup.  The actual turn happens very very quickly.”

Near the end of the video, Amy goes into detail about free leg placement and movement.  Notice the pigeon-toe placement to “keep the hip up” and the small lifting motion during the turn.
