USFS Moves In The Field: Backward Inside Counters (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma finishes her discussion of counters.  In the previous videos she covered forward outside countersforward inside counters and backward outside counters.  In this video, she tackles backward inside counters.

This is a short video and Amy quickly covers body alignment, arm and shoulder usage, knee action, free foot placement, edge pressure, body lean, and blade usage.  Amy reminds us, “Again, to start the turn you’re going to use a pressure of the edge and a rotation of the shoulder.”  Notice in Amy’s demonstration the pronation of the ankle to maintain the pressure on the inside edge on entry.  Many skaters and coaches only focus on body lean and knee bend.  The ankle movement is critical to good counters.

Amy also addresses the most common error of releasing off of the back inside edge too early.  It is critical for the skater to keep the body lean into the circle and keep pressure on the inside edge right up to the turn.  Often just focusing on the skater’s alignment and body lean is enough to solve the typical problems with this turn.

Brilliant video again, I find your explanations of blade pressure, shoulder rotation, body lean etc very clear & helpful. Please do some for Rockers! (& Twizzles or Choctaws..)

Thanks Amy! Such a simple explanation and easy to teach! When I did figures we always had such a big scissor motion to make the turns deeper. I like the lifting of the free leg for the counters in the Moves.
