Kristina Anderson explains why kettlebell training can be so effective for figure skaters. Historically, figure skating has been slow to adopt non-skating training methods to improve on-ice performance, especially those methods often used by bulky weightlifters and football players. But kettlebell training offers a number of advantages for skaters.
Kristina says, “Kettlebell training is specifically meant to develop power through the hips, legs, and glutes. And this is great for skaters with jumping and anytime you need to explode out and have great power.”
Wikipedia notes that “The basic movements, such as the swing, snatch, and the clean and jerk, engage the entire body at once, and in a way that mimics real world activities…Kettlebell exercises are in their nature holistic; therefore they work several muscles simultaneously…”
This is exactly the kind of training that skaters need to build functional strength and stability that they can apply easily and effortlessly to figure skating. Enjoy the rest of Kristina’s kettlebell series.
