Figure Skating Spins: Beginning Spins (Charyl Brusch)

Charyl Brusch introduces herself and offers some basic insights about spinning.  More information about Charyl can be obtained on her bio page.  In this video Charyl covers the following basic concepts:

1. All spins start with a three-turn (except flying spins) – An act of changing or reversing the course, or direction,

2. All spins spin backwards (except change of edge spins)

3. There are two main spin entrances
a. Back inside edge stepping forward to a forward outside edge, and
b. Forward inside three-turn, stepping forward onto the opposite foot (This does not include stars, traveling three’s, etc.)

4. There are three basic spin positions
a. Upright (layback and Biellmann are considered upright spins)
b. Sit spin
c. Camel spin

Charyl teaches same hand in front technique meaning that a skater that spins to the left steps into the spin with the left arm/hand in front.  She prefers this as she feels it’s easier for the skater to control.

We are very fortunate to have a spin specialist of Charyl’s caliber as a presenter at iCoachSkating.com. Please leave a comment for Charyl or other members below.

Good basic info…I like going in with more in front (helps me get a strong hook and arrest the forward motion). Can’t wait to hear more of her tips, will there be more in the future?

Thanks for joining iCoachSkating! I am excited to learn more about how you teach spins. I, too, use the left arm in front. I look forward to learning a lot from you! Thanks!!

This was a good intro page for new coaches. I would like to see her actually show theses spins. I also use the left arm in front on the entry. Thanks
