Audrey Weisiger discusses how to start young skaters spinning, from the very beginning. She starts the video by offering three suggestions for determining a skater’s dominant spin direction. In the beginning, Audrey doesn’t tell the skater anything technical. Instead she focuses only on having fun and accomplishing simple tasks. By drawing on the ice, it becomes a fun game.
Audrey also explains that in the beginning she really likes to get skaters spinning in BOTH directions. She makes a point about not forcing a skater to spin in a certain direction. She likes to give the skaters an opportunity for self expression which helps to develop some basic skill and develop a comfort level with one particular spin direction.
Audrey says, “I honestly believe that a lot of skaters can learn to jump and spin in whatever direction they’re taught to jump and spin, if they’re talented.” Obviously a lot of skaters have a strong dominance that would be foolish to ignore, and Audrey’s point assumes the skater is “well-taught.”

Thanks for your wisdom Audrey! Great tips!
I love the idea of drawing the circle and the arrows on the ice and then having them follow it around. Thanks for the great set of tips!
