Grassroots To Champions Skating Camp: Private Lesson – Part 1 (Chris Conte)

In this video taken at the 2009 G2C Extreme Super Camp, Chris Conte gives a lesson to one of his own skaters in preparation for an exhibition performance.  This is the first of 3 videos of this lesson.

In this first video, Chris intially focuses on the weight transfer, air position, and pre-landing position for the axel.  If you listen carefully, Chris uses very specific language that helps his skaters understand the important concepts.  One I’d like to mention is Chris’s use of the right shoulder as the “pivot point” for the landing (at 0:59 in the video).

Chris also makes a great point that many skaters and coaches often overlook.  Maintaining flow in jump landings does more than make the jump beautiful and add to it’s point value in competition.  It also conserves the flow energy which makes getting into the next element that much easier for the skater.  And as Chris notes, part of the flow comes from a fully extended landing position.

I think it’s always valuable to see how other coaches teach.  And Chris is an excellent coach to model.
