Bobbe Shire discusses camel-change-camel. As Bobbe says, “The hardest thing about camel-change-camel is to do nothing. We all want to work it too hard.”
Because the upper body is already in the correct position, the mechanics of the change are essentially the same as Bobbe described in her sit-change-sit video. To get the fattest George, Bobbe wants the skater to swing their leg around at the same height as their hip while their skating foot “pulls away” from the original spin center. The free foot eventually drops down after a half circle and is placed in the center of the original circle. The skater should get right to the axis (“mitten crunch” and “toe/knee/bellybutton”). The original skating foot then becomes the free foot and lifts back behind. The new skating knee remains bent for one full turn and then the skater straightens it to achieve the final position.
Bobbe’s says it like this: “The spins are really close but the push is wide.”
Two of the demonstrators use the “stars” entrance for the camel in their demonstrations. We’ll have more on “stars” in an upcoming video.
To review, Bobbe says “Just half circle with the free leg (up at hip height), half circle with the leg you’ve been spinning on, stay down for the first turn and you’re there.”
