Amy Brolsma shows how she teaches back outside figure loops. (To see Amy’s presentation on forward inside and outside figure loops, visit her bio page.) There’s been a renewal of interest in figure loops based on their use in footwork sequences for IJS programs and the new USFS moves in the field patterns. But many young coaches who never did figures have never really learned loops themselves and have not learned how to teach them. So today’s skaters and coaches will both benefit from this presentation.
First Amy teaches the proper push and she works on the back outside entrance edge. She wants the skater looking back over the heel of their skating foot. She also wants very strong shoulder rotation and ankle pressure. She explains the free leg position and movement, including the power-pull out of the loop, as well as arm position and movement.
Amy suggests practicing on 2 feet to understand the tightness of the edge and develop an understanding of the proper feeling.
