Ice Skating Turns Advanced: Backward Inside Brackets (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma teaches backward inside brackets.  This is a continuation of Amy’s discussion of forward outside bracketsforward inside brackets, and backward outside brackets).

Amy begins with discussing arm placement and movement as well as shoulder usage to make the turn happen.  She says, “Rotate in. Rotate out.  Equal, equal.”  She also covers where the skaters weight is on the blade.  And just like back outside brackets, the turn motion is very quick (a hiccup).

Head and body lean is extremely important on backward inside brackets.  Amy also takes some time to discuss the importance of knee rhythm for this turn.  There should be a little extra knee bend and edge pressure just before the turn, which helps the “turn go quicker.”  Amy gives an excellent slow motion demonstration of the blade usage for a proper back inside bracket.

Amy also shares her “runny nose” concept which helps her skaters remember to lean properly into the circle.  She also offers some troubleshooting hints to help fix common issues.
