Figure Skating Turns Advanced: Backward Inside Rockers (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma teaches backward inside rockers.  This is a continuation of Amy’s presentation on rockers that began with forward outside rockers, forward inside rockers, and backward outside rockers.  For the backward inside rocker, the skater should start on the back inside edge and press on their big toe (forward on blade).  Amy again emphasizes very strong shoulder rotation and proper blade usage which is ball of foot, heel for the turn, and back after the turn.

It’s important to keep the feet close together to properly control back inside rockers.  The free foot should be placed in a toe-to-heel position prior to the turn.  The free knee comes up during the turn and should be facing down the long axis.

On the exit of the turn the skating hip should be pushed forward and the free hip pushed down to maintain the strong forward inside edge.  Control of the exit edge is developed by both using enough shoulder rotation in and out of the turn as well as hip placement after the turn.

At the end of the video, Amy addresses a common band-aid solution to controlling the exit edge that is inferior to learning proper body position and alignment.
