Ice Skating Turns Advanced: Forward Inside Counter (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma continues her discussion of counters.  In the previous video she discussed forward outside counters.  In this video, she tackles forward inside counters.

Forward inside counters start with opposite hand and free leg in front, skating shoulder back.  Start by pressing on the back part of the blade, rock to the toe, and bend deeply onto the ball of the foot.  Knee action is down up down.

Amy teaches a minimal amount of movement when learning the turn so the skater can focus on the edges.  To do this she initially has them simply keep their free leg in front.  Once the skater is comfortable staying on the inside edge for the whole turn, she introduces the free leg movement.  Free foot is in front, then goes to toe-to-toe during the turn, and returns to the forward position.  During the toe-to-toe, the hips are internally rotated so the feet are pigeon-toed.  After the turn, Amy has the skater clamp their knees together and bend deeply.

Amy also talks about common problems and solutions as well as body lean.

Thanks for your help Amy! I am teaching Novice moves for the first time and this really helps! I did counters as figures, but that was a long time ago…..

I like your idea of just going toe-to-toe (and not a full out sissor) when just beginning this move. Less movement…..less complicated! Thanks Amy!
