Ice Skating Moves For Beginners: Forward Outside 3 Turns (Amy Brolsma)

Amy Brolsma explains how she teaches forward outside three turns.  Notice that Amy believes her skaters should fully understand the concept of the three turn, including how the turn starts and stops.  She uses a hula hoop to help develop proper awareness of all the parts of the turn.  The hula hoop reduces dipping and leaning and keeps the skater aligned while building control faster.  And as Amy mentions, the hula hoop is fun for the skaters.

Amy identifies one of the most common problems in three turns as the tendency for skaters to raise their free hip after the turn.  She also address the problem of dipping into the turn.  She also comments several times that the skater should be back on the blade on the forward entrance edge and she demands that her skaters have real edges, rather than trying to turn from flats.

Amy believes that skaters should learn how to use the blade properly in the turn, even at the beginning level. She offers an excellent rocking exercise to help with this concept.

When teaching to basic skills skaters, Amy starts with two-foot turns and progresses to one-foot turns.  But she notes that when her skaters are transitioning to the one foot turn, she does not allow them to put their free foot down after the turn, as this typically becomes a habit that can be hard to break.

I’ve used a hoola hoop to teach 3 turns and it works like a charm! I really like the explanation of the rocking on the blade and the emphasis on the hips. I’ll be including that in my teaching for sure!

I like the hula hoop idea! This is a very good explanation of the three-turn and technique for teaching it. I can’t wait to try this with my students.

Amy, Thank you so much for this video. I am an adult skater making my way through basic skills and moving two-foot turns have plagued me for over six months!! I just could not get them to be smooth or consistent! I watched this video and immediately went and bought a hula hoop. On my first turn with it, I immediately understood that twisting and untwisting of the upper body and hips that has been explained to me countless times, but until today I never truly felt or understood. I can’t thank you enough!!
