Spin specialist Bobbe Shire discusses the camel spin. She explains why a camel is unique and different than any other spin. She makes the observation that the hook is incredibly important in camel spins and it’s very difficult to gain speed in a camel.
Bobbe compares the camel spin to a see-saw. She uses this to explain why young skaters going through growth spurts can have a very hard time keeping their camels consistent. See some of Bobbe’s earlier videos here at iCoachSkating.com to review some of her terminology, such as “toe-knee-bellybutton,” “mitten crunch,” and “George.”
She provides helpful exercises at the wall and shows a spiral exercise going down the ice. She also shares a great “spotlights” concept to help skaters understand the proper positions. She also discusses whether or not to wait with the camel until the skater can do a sit spin.

Great tips
Thankyou so much! Any tips for kids who twist to the left and end up looking like a fish or going on the inside edge. Ive tried belly to the ice and keeping the heading looking forward but a couple of kids have a problem with this……
Wonderful advise and great tips. Thank you!!
I love the exercise at the end, I’ll try it.
