Bobbe Shire gives a thorough explanation of the sit spin. She discusses how it differs from the upright scratch spin. She also talks about the importance of “locking the back down.” Bobbe does not like the “Shoot-the-duck” sit spin and she explains why.
One of the best tips in this video is Bobbe’s description of how to get up out of a sit spin effortlessly. (I’ve used this with many skaters and it works! -Trevor) She also talks about body type and how it affects sit spins.
Do you tell your skaters to “bring their leg around” in a sit spin? Bobbe prefers describing it at “release the leg around.” And finally Bobbe shares why she thinks having the thighs completely together is better than leaving any space between the legs.
There’s a few other great gems in this video so enjoy. (For example, she says a skater needs to be tightest in their butt for a scratch spin.)

Bobby, I think the best information I garned from this video is what you said about closing with the hip and inner thigh. I realize now one of my students is closing more with her free foot. I also like the “open” free foot idea upon the hook. Thanks Bobby!
I love the discussion on body type and the fact you have an excellent skater with a sit spin challege. Thanks Bobby!
Great ideas Bobbe! I like the “lock the back down” and telling the skater to flex the back and the abs. I am going to use your tips right away! Thank you for your time!!
