Spinning In Figure Skating: Entry Speed (Bobbe Shire)

Bobbe Shire talks about one of the most misunderstood aspects of spinning, which is setup speed.  Bobbe talks about how high setup speeds are difficult to control and generally do not add to the speed of the spin, especially for lower level skaters.  One of the most common results of entering a spin too fast is traveling and she has her skaters demonstrate what she means.

Note that Bobbe is not suggesting that you always have your skaters start from a standstill or a crawl.  She’s just saying there’s an upper limit to the speed beyond which getting a good, fast, centered spin is very difficult.  This is a common problem and Bobbe discusses how many skaters just want to go fast all the time.  It’s our job as coaches to put the brakes on so that they have some control.

I taught a spin class Monday at a figure skating camp and I noticed ALL the girls were using the 3-turn and one crossover entrance on practice later! All of your steps helped them so much! THANK YOU!

Thank you Bobbe! All of your videos are so helpful. I have a speed demon too and I will work harder to get her to slow down so her spins are better!
