Bobbe Shire discusses optional arm positions for forward spin entry. Bobbe teaches the entry with opposite arm in front and she explains why in this video. She uses her mitten to make her point about twisting the body and coiling to get natural rotation. She explains potential issues with same arm entries, including timing and overaggressive swinging. She also briefly mentioned the both-arm entry (swimming motion) as well.
When we talked about this during filming, she made it clear that she still wants the skater to “ride the edge.” The most common mistake of using the opposite arm is the skater tries to crank the entrance with their body instead of riding the edge all the way to the “curlicue.” Bobbe wants the skater to twist their body into position but still ride the edge to the hook before releasing it.
This topic comes up a lot in coaching discussions and here’s your chance to hear it from a true expert.

Such a short simple video but I love how clear you are on “why” you use the arms the way you do. T
could we use someone for a demonstration?
Carol, please see Bobbi’s next video in the series for a full demonstration of the opposite hand in front arms she references in this video. (https://icoachskating.synapse-d.com/bobbe-shire-presentation-edge/)
As a tall (5’11”) adult gold skater, I really appreciate this entry style, especially for the camel! Applying Bobbe’s methods have made my spin so much more consistent because there is less to go wrong with these long limbs/levers I’m trying to control. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Miss Bobbe!!
