Spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues her discussion on centering spins. In this video Charyl discusses going from the open “position number one” to “position number two” which in this case is a one foot spin position with the free foot pulled up next to the skating foot.
Charyl wants the skater to bring the free foot and arms in at the same time. She wants the arms level with the shoulders, the free knee at a right angle, and internal pressure on the free knee (pushing the right knee across to the left).
The demonstrator is clearly a good spinner who had not done one foot spins in a very long time. But this gives Charyl a chance to address issues we’re more likely to see with less skilled skaters. Charyl offers several tips.
If the three turn is OK but the skater makes loops, Charyl feels that the skater is on too much of an inside edge. She offers a number of ideas on how to get more over the skating foot, including straightening the skating knee slightly, turning the body slightly to the left (skating side), “feeling” the foot making little circles and not loops, and picking up the right foot and hip.
Charyl reiterates that she wants her skaters doing upright spins on a slightly bent skating knee. She feels it makes the spins less scratchy and “heavy.” And she wants her skaters pressing down into the ice rather than spinning on top of the ice.
We are very fortunate to have a spin specialist of Charyl’s caliber as a presenter at iCoachSkating.com. Please leave a comment for Charyl or other members below.

excellent! I would like to see her thoughts on sit and camel and back spin as well. a really nice compliment to Bobbis style as well. We are lucky to have them both!
