Joan Orvis discusses some common mistakes that skaters make when learning forward inside and outside edges. This is a follow-up video to Joan’s Forward Outside and Inside Edge video published earlier.
The common problems she mentions are: 1. Free foot passes wide instead of passing close 2. Body too square at the start instead of having skating side lead 3. Hands down instead of hands parallel to ice surface (palms down) – quarters drill! 4. Arms bent instead of being locked 5. Arms passing wide instead of passing close 6. Not enough body lean into edge 7. Too much tension
Joan explains why each of these issues need to be corrected and gives reasons for everything.
She also makes the observation that many kids stand very straight up and down when working on edges, but this means they cannot possibly be on edges.

Thanks Joan! A great reminder for me as I have a whole batch of little ones again!
Great summary – I like the quarters idea – I’m going to try that!
