Audrey Weisiger describes a series of fundamental drills she uses to develop her skaters’ air positions as well as their take-off and landing skills. To begin the drills she has her skater put on an ankle buzzer to ensure ankle contact during the drills. These drills have become fairly famous. You’ll notice Audrey’s reference to “h-position” and “D-position.”
Her demonstrator skater, Rachel, does these difficult drills and demonstrates Audrey’s concepts of proper alignment. There’s lots in this video including a “wall drill” or “snap drill”, a “pivot drill” and a “guard arm drill.” The “guard arm” is a great tip for coaches with skaters that drop their landing side in the air.
A number of coaches have similar drills. Please take a moment to compare these drills to those recommended by Tom Hickey. These drills are one of the most effective ways to develop skater body awareness and control.

This video is great!
Love love love the skate guard exercise. Thank you Audrey and Trevor…keep ’em coming!
This is a weird comment: I could see the value of this stuff, but it’s almost more control than I ever had myself as a skater, and I find myself a little afraid of asking a student to do it. The skating guard idea is the one I can see myself using the most.
Great exercises! Thank you for sharing.
Wow! I love all the exercises. I have a student working on her double loop and I know this will help tremendously! I also love the pivot/axel exercise. Audrey and Trevor-I can’t thank you enough!!!
I loved following the progress – from start to finish! Really good exercises! I like how positive Audrey is with her skaters. VERY GOOD!
The “gaurd arm” is GREAT! I can’t wait to use this one!
The progression of steps and your explanation is clear. I feel ready to go out and practice this so I can finally complete my back spin as well as grasp my jumps, landings and spins with better posture. I am excited to try these out thank you very much.
