Michelle Leigh explains one of her favorite drills for her skaters. This is called the Helicopter Exercise and Michelle uses it to work on her skater’s body alignment and movement prior to jumping. As she says, “focus on getting a strong shoulder position while doing the Helicopter to compliment what we’re doing in the air.” There’s some hidden gems in this video so watch carefully.
Notice the twisted-to-the-right body position. Also notice the comments about turning the head to the right on landing to stop rotation. Also notice how Michelle moves her body while keeping her head still while talking about the Walley. The Helicopter Exercise can be modified to use nearly any footwork you desire.

First chance I had to watch this! I had to watch it several times, but saw something different each time. I haven’t really taught many Walleys, or done the helicopter. Can’t wait to try! Thanks Michelle!
