Michelle Leigh continues her discussion of the waltz jump. In this video, she talks about the step. She wants the skater to feel like they’re moving out over the edge. She talks about head placement and she stresses the importance of keeping the head up. Keeping the head up keeps head in line with the spine and it also helps the jump maintain flow. Swingy or rocking waltz jumps and axels (waxels) are often the result of skaters looking down.

I tried using a bent free leg as you suggested when I skated today and it felt like I went up instead of around. It was a great feeling. I will definitely teach it that way even though it’s not the way I learned it. Thanks for keeping me current and more confident in teaching the beginning skater.
