Figure Skating Jumps: Axel Class – Part 5 (Audrey Weisiger & Nick Perna)

This is the final part of the on-ice axel class taught by Nick Perna and Audrey Weisiger at the 2010 G2C Extreme Supercamp.  In the first part of the class, they covered the proper setup and in the second part they covered the step forward.  In Part 3 they discussed the climb up into the axel and in Part 4, they had the class attempt axels that they provided feedback about.  In this final part, Audrey has one of the skaters do one foot axels as a drill for double axel.

Audrey wants the skater to do a one foot axel, land with the shoulders facing into the circle, tuck the free foot under, and switch feet into a d-position backspin.  Notice how challenging the skaters find this drill.  Finally, Audrey and Nick have one of the skaters attempt a double axel for the class.

Note, you can also use one foot waltz jumps as a drill for single axel.

fabulous. there are many issues here, with the axel and all its moving parts, and the take off sets the tone for the entire jump. i noticed the free leg position (foot out to the side not directly in front) in a michelle leigh axel video- but it was never explained…this video makes many things clear that i wasn’t certain about before. AMAZING. i am certain these concepts will make a major difference in not only the jump itself but the comfort and organization within the jump. thank you so much!!

: I’m going back to this series to help me get my axel back! Lost the axel but my double loop is more secure now. Maybe I’ll find my axel in the lost & found. 🙂
