Off Ice Figure Skating Jumps – Axel Training – Part 7 (Nick Perna)

This is the final installment of Nick Perna’s off-ice jump class.  For a thorough background to this video, see Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5, and Part 6 posted earlier.  In this part of the class, Nick focuses on the details of off-ice axels.

Initially Nick demonstrates the most common ways for U.S. skaters to perform an off-ice axel type jump.  As Nick points out, these methods don’t “duplicate the edge you get on the ice.”  Instead Nick shares a better method used by European skaters.

The method Nick introduces simulates a real edge on the ice.  It uses a “run-up” that gives the proper body lean and energy for the jump.  To develop the proper feeling, Nick has the skaters run in a big circle with their backs facing into the circle.  Notice that this means the left side leads and the right side is held back (for skaters that jump to the left) just like a good axel take-off edge.

Next Nick has the class do off-ice waltz jumps.  He addresses common problems to avoid, including running sideways. The feet must be pointed forward to run properly.  Other errors include running on tip toes, letting the shoulders twist, and lack of curve on the run-up.  Nick also discusses proper arm movement for this drill.

Finally, the class gets to do full off-ice axels.  This is a fantastic video and it updates the off-ice axel.  Thanks Nick for sharing this!!

For an adult skater with limited ice time, this off-ice series has been really helpful for improving balance and alignment on the ice. Thanks!

Any adult skater, myself included, needs to start (or reset) with this series to set up a good foundation for jumps (IMHO). Wow. Thank you!
