Nick Perna continues his off-ice jump class. This is the second part of a multi-part video series (see Part 1 here). In this video, Nick starts with “d-position”. This position is characterized by a straight and locked landing leg, a bent free leg with ankle contact and a raised free hip. Nick talks about the fine-tuned balancing of the foot.
Editor’s Note: Balance is something that figure skaters take for granted but it’s amazing how many truly have balance problems. Ask your skaters to hit a simple spiral position and hold it for 10 seconds. The results are generall very disappointing. It is very rare to find a skater that can do this without first practicing and learning to balance. -Trevor
Next Nick progresses to rotating while hopping in the d-position. The ankles should stay together and the landing leg should stay straight. The skater should stay over their hip the entire time. Next, Nick has the skaters transition from h-position to d-position while rotating and hopping. It should accelerate slightly as the skater pulls in and it should be easier to rotate faster.
These drills are very hard for most skaters to do correctly. (It’s easy to do these drills poorly, which is why off-ice jump training should be done under the supervision of a qualified coach, just like on-ice jump training.)
