Off Ice Figure Skating Jumps – Part 5 (Nick Perna)

Nick Perna continues his off-ice jump class.  This is the fifth part of a multi-part video series (see Part 1,Part 2Part 3, and Part 4).  In this part of the class, Nick moves on to standstill jumps that simulate the loop, flip, and lutz.

Notice how Nick introduces this with simple movements rather than immediately going to a full loop jump.  A very large percentage of skaters will attempt an off-ice loop jump by opening their hips and pulling their free leg off to the side.  Nick’s step-by-step development with the focus on less rotation and a strong and correct h-position can greatly minimize this problem.

In the video, Nick has the skaters in an initial position on their non-landing foot so they can rock back and put weight onto their take-off/landing foot at the beginning of the drill.  This serves the very important function of giving the skater some rhythm and also better simulating the feeling of flip and lutz (and the pressure of the deepening edge on loop).

I think it’s useful to point out that Nick is not having the skaters use any kind of “reach back” in these drills.  He instead has them focused on alignment and vertical positioning over their feet.

I have a lot of adult students who would really enjoy and benefit from these drills. I can’t wait to show them!

I’m really enjoying this series while quarantined at home, I am hoping that they help me keep up with my skills until I can skate again (adult skater)
