Page Lipe demonstrates a fantastic exercise to develop the proper core strength and awareness for correct air positions. This is a conceptually “simple” exercise, but it’s surprisingly difficult to do this exercise well in practice.
In essence, Page has the skater stand against a wall and work on flattening their entire back against the wall with varying degrees of leg straightness. By practicing this exercise regularly, it is possible to dramatically improve a skater’s air position, particularly if they have a “sway back” which is so common among skaters.
For smaller skaters, doing this exercise against the barrier and then immediately trying to feel the same position and muscle usage in a backspin can offer dramatic results. It is also possible to have a taller skater leave the ice briefly to stand against a wall and come back on for the backspin. Try it!
This is another great video from Page so please remember to leave a comment.
