Page Lipe shows how she develops the salchow. In this video she starts at the beginning and works her way up to the double. She shares a lot of information regarding optional entries and the common mistakes she sees.
As in Page’s Developing The Axel video, there’s some especially interesting concepts that Page takes for granted, but that I made her comment further on. For example, she talks about the skater’s head position during the entry/take-off edge. This is one of the ‘secrets’ of top coaches as there’s nothing natural about this. But as Page says in the video, skaters get used to it. She describes a great drill for small skaters to get the proper feeling.
Please compare the methods that Page uses with those shared by Chris Conte on developing the salchow.
There’s a lot of great information in this video (and some of the spins in the background of the video are very impressive).

I could kiss you Page! My Salchow has been so bad ever since I learned it. I just got back from the rink and trying the lessons on your video and finally feel like I’m doing it correctly 🙂 I especially liked the recommendation to practice it all on one side of a line, and even better, doing it with my hands on my shoulders. I was right away able to lead with my foot and cross over the circle and snap my feet together in the air. By the end of the day I was even getting my foot crossed just before landing. (FYI – I am an adult skater who occasionally gets private lessons but often I have to learn on my own and from books so this is just really really great!)
Very useful tips on the salchow, and the instructions are easy to understand as well. Thanks a lot. 🙂
Very nice progression trough the jump, lots of help and tips. Great, Thanks!!
Hey Page – I loved everything you did on the Salchow. Especially that you got the head to the right – very important. I teach it exactly the same and have produced the best triple salchows and quad attempts. The one thing I add which I think is the most important of all for double, triple and quads if “Timing” and the fact that you must insert a “Pause” before you jump – this in my opinion will give you consistant jumps. Loved you Kind regards Stewart – UK Coach
Thank you…appreciate all the tips.
Every explanation is great! Lot of information! Thanks, Page.
Lots of great tips for coaches and skaters. I will use them for my students. Thank you.
Thank you Page. I like the different entries too!
Page – this was excellent. Well-narrated and organized. Thank you!
Excellent! Sharing the different entries was also very good suggestions. Still not my best jump but maybe this will help me perfect it.
great clear information!
Great explaination to lay persons and skaters alike. I think anyone who can skate could follow your precise demonstations. Good Job!
This was excellent! Especially the part about different take offs. Thank you.
Can’t believe I missed this video!! Thanks so much for the great, concise explanation. I love the different entries too!
This is excellent. Beautiful double salchow positioning. I sincerely appreciate the great explanation.
Thank you Page. So much information in such a short video!! Love the errors to look for, and ways to switch it up.
Fantastic! Thank you for the tips, I liked the different entry take offs shown.
Great information! Not only for salchow, but also using the box arms on landings. Going to try that today!
This video was OUTSTANDING! Thank you so much. As a new coach there is nothing more valuable than seeing a jump explained at the entry level. Knowing how to do it and how to teach it are distinctly different skills. If all the jumps could have a video like this, it would be so helpful.
WOW! Paige has a nice salchow. Thank you for sharing your mastery. CC
Thank you Page. Your explanations were very clear – I have several skaters working on double sals right now and your video provides some good reminders of what I need to be looking for. Thanks!
