Learn To Ice Skate For Kids: Basic Jumping – Part 2 (Sheila Thelen)

This is the second in a series of  videos of Sheila Thelen teaching a young skater in a private lesson.  Sheila’s skater is a 6 year old boy named Milan.  Make sure you watch the other videos in this series.

In this video, Sheila is working with Milan on his waltz jump.  If you work with young skaters you know that getting them to use the proper feet and arms can be a real challenge.  Notice that Milan’s first attempt is from the wrong foot.  And then notice that Sheila physically touches his left leg.  This is a very common technique for coaches to use, as the “residual feeling” of the touch lasts longer than the mental thought about right or left.  Many coaches use this same concept with more advanced skaters for such things as details of air position.

Sheila explains her “ketchup and mustard” game and it’s typical of the creative ways that Sheila keeps her young skaters interested and involved during their lessons.

Sheila, such a cute boy! Great back spin tips! I would love to see you teach a skater at this level a cross foot spin. Thanks so much!
