In this video, Tom Hickey shows how to use a Skate Spinner for jump development – Part 4. Tom has Taylor demonstrate air and landing positions, landing drills, and take-off drills using the Skate Spinner. As of the publication date of this webpage, a Skate Spinner sells for between $40 and $60 depending on the model and the retailer. This is a very small price to pay for a skater to develop control and stability of positions and movements.
Please note about 2:10 into the video, Tom steps onto the spinner and demonstrates how the skating foot actually moves during the axel take-off. He casually mentions that the hips open. In reality, this is exactly what happens but often this detail is missed by many coaches. Make sure you understand what Tom is saying. The deepening of the take-off edge (or moving to a skid) helps create the rotational energy for the jump. Tom also briefly mentions the shoulder position for a good axel step. These “little details” make a huge difference in the quality of the jump.
This is an excellent video and it really touches upon some simple concepts that can immediately help your skaters.
