Trevor Laak shares the results of the first part of a survey of iCoachSkating.com subscribers on the details at the moment of take-off for the axel, salchow, and toe loop jumps. Here is a copy of the quiz for your reference.

In the results video, Trevor shares the survey results (only) from the coaches taking the survey, including the correct answers, and he explains why he ran the survey. As Trevor notes, a major myth in figure skating is that an axel takes off in a classic h-position. Video proves it does not. Trevor similarly shows that this misconception also applies to the toe loop, in which the free leg should come through take-off nearly straight.

Any information is good to hear so it gets everyone thinking & learning new ways to make it easier for the skater to accomplish it sooner.
This has been an eye opener for myself for sure, always felt the salchow should be the exact same takeoff as the axel, still a bit confused on the toe loop takeoff with the foot being so low and straight but looking forward to further teaching for sure. Thanks for all your hard work in helping us with the technical components of jumping, so appreciated.

From a low-level skater’s (rather than coach’s) perspective, it is always helpful to see what happens in slow motion, because in real-time demonstration things happen too fast to be able to note and understand the details. Thank you!
