Chris Conte gives a pole harness lesson on double axel. This video is a continuation of Chris’s “Cat and Mouse” method video here at iCoachSkating.com. Please review the previous video to make sense of Chris’s comments on “cats” and “mice”. He uses phrases like “snap right to the cat” and “bring the mouse to the cat…they’re best friends while you’re rotating.” On landing he tells the skater to “stay with the cat and let the mice run away.”
As always, Chris’s lessons border on comedy acts as he talks about “a cat community” and he makes cat sounds (for the skaters entertainment as well as his own). He also uses chef analogies. For example, he tells the skater to keep her speed “medium rare” (which means “not too much speed”). When he says “it’s still a little undercooked” he means the jump isn’t quite ready to come out of the harness and it needs a little more work.
Notice that Chris likes his skaters to learn double axel from moving rather than from a standstill. He also tells his skater to keep her head still. When he mentions Nick, he’s referring to Nick Perna who also works with this skater.
This video shows how Chris uses the combination of the pole harness and video analysis to help his skaters make maximum progress. There’s tons of great information in this video. Enjoy!

Thanks Chris! I have used the cat and mouse game and it works so well! I hope to have skaters that have such nice beginning double axels! You rock!
