Figure Skating Tips for Advanced Skater Part 1 – Back Spin & Landing Position (Nick Perna)

Nick Perna gives a lesson to Isabelle.  Isabelle is a high level skater working on double axel and triples.  This video is the first in a series of videos covering the entire half-hour lesson.  In the first part of this lesson, Nick focuses on the landing position and the backspin as it relates to the air position for these high level jumps.

As Nick notes, he can tell a lot about a skater’s jumping by the way they execute their backspin.  In this video, he addresses Isabelle’s tendency to arch her back, both in her rotational position and in the landing position.  To correct the tummy out position in the spin, Nick tells the skater to engage the core muscles as though someone were punching them in the stomach.

To address the arching on landing, Nick has the skater do a back spiral and then adjust the body position until it reaches a non-arched landing position.  As Nick notes, skaters that arch a lot on landing tend to lean back and stumble out of landings, not to mention the position is bad for the back.  He has the skater do a backspin and then exit using a “little back spiral.”

Stay tuned for the continuation of this lesson…

Wow…..I currently teach mosty Pre Pre skaters and I got a ton of information out of this clip. When coaches on this site like Nick point out details that I haven’t considered, it is really excited for me as it sharpens my own skills….let’s see…..in less than 4 minutes of my off ice time! Love it….Thanks Nick!
