Nick Perna continues his lesson with Isabelle. This is the third part of a 5 part series (see Part 1 andPart 2). In this part of the lesson, Nick takes a look at Isabelle”s double axel. Nick uses the words “a little swingy” and he”s concerned about a “swerve” prior to the step forward. He takes a look at her setup and walk through. He comments again about her arched back position.
Nick suggests changing the preparation edge position to use a toe-to-heel position. It is very common for top coaches to go back to simple things like setup position or turn control to address a swingy jump. Notice that the change in setup is uncomfortable for the skater and she pops a number of attempts. This is a typical response to this kind of a change. But the skater makes a pretty good attempt at the end of the video.
Stay tuned for the continuation of this lesson…

Loved the reference to figures. Right on target.
Nick, THANK YOU! I teach entrances this way and I appreciate the verification! I have seen some wild, extended free leg entrances and always knew that the close toe to heel free foot was better! You rock!!
